The hidden worm damage behind your hens' thin shells (and why more calcium never fixes it)

I have spent over fifteen years working with backyard flocks, and thin shells are one of the most common problems keepers bring to me. They arrive frustrated, sometimes embarrassed, usually convinced they have missed something obvious.


They have not. But what is actually going on is almost never what they were told.


Most of the calcium advice given to backyard keepers only addresses one half of the problem. It assumes the issue is how much calcium is going in. In the flocks I see, that is rarely where it breaks down.

Most keepers are fighting the wrong battle

At first it looks simple.


A hen lays a thin shell. Then another. Then the dented ones start showing up.


So you do what every feed store, every forum, and most vets will tell you to do. You add calcium.


But here is what that actually gets you:

✔️ Free choice oyster shell. Makes calcium available. Does nothing if she cannot absorb it.

✔️ Crushed eggshells fed back. Same calcium, same problem, no additional absorption.

✔️ Higher calcium layer feed. Raises the amount going in. Does not change how much gets through.

✔️ Calcium supplements in water or feed. More of the same input into the same bottleneck. 

That is why keepers notice a small improvement, or none at all, and then nothing.

The keeper who made me look again

Her name was Joanne, and she kept nine hens outside Peterborough.

Seven months of that, and her best layer was still producing shells so thin they broke in the nest box before Joanne ever reached them.

"Why is she still laying broken eggs, when I have done everything I was supposed to do?"

 

I did not have a good answer for her that day. So I went looking for one properly.

The hidden cause: worm damage to the gut

Here is where the thinking has been backwards.


It is not that she is not getting enough calcium. It is not that she needs a better feed. It is not that she is simply an old hen.


The real problem is this: calcium has to be absorbed through the gut lining before her body can use any of it, and worms live in exactly that part of her.


That gut lining is the doorway. Every bit of calcium she eats has to pass through it to reach the shell gland. Nothing that fails to cross it counts, no matter how much of it is sitting in the dish.


When a worm burden builds, two things happen at once. The worms physically damage and inflame the intestinal lining she absorbs through. And they compete directly for the nutrients passing through it, taking their share before she gets hers.


So the calcium goes in. And a great deal of it goes straight through her and out the other end.


Gaps open in what she can actually absorb. The shell gland gets less than it needs. The shells come out thin, dented, rough, or so soft they break before you reach the house.


Adding more calcium does not repair the doorway. That is why it works a little, or not at all, and then stops working.
 

And here is the part that frustrates me most. If you have felt like you are going crazy, buying supplement after supplement with nothing to show for it, you are not crazy. The approach was never designed to fix this. Nobody explained to you that absorption is a separate question from supply.

Why the common fixes fail, and will keep failing

I have watched keepers try every one of these.

More oyster shell? Increases what is available. Does not repair absorption. Fails.

❌ Crushed eggshells fed back? Same input, same bottleneck. Fails.

❌ Higher calcium layer feed? More going in, the same amount getting through. Fails.

❌ Calcium supplement in the water? Still supply. Still not absorption. Fails.

❌ Cleaning the coop harder? Good practice, and worth doing. Worm eggs survive in soil and litter regardless. Fails.

They all miss the same thing: the gut is where this breaks.

Before anyone says it, yes, sometimes it is age

Sometimes thin shells really are age. An older hen's shells do get thinner and that is normal. A hen in molt or coming out of one will lay oddly for a while. Extreme heat can do it. Some breeds are simply more prone to it than others.


If she is old, or molting, or you are in the middle of a heat wave, start there.


But if she is young, in lay, and not molting, and the calcium has been going in for weeks with nothing to show for it, this is not an age problem. It is an absorption problem, and it needs a different approach entirely.

The eggs look the same. This is where most keepers quit. Look at the ground instead. Droppings firming up. Less mess at the vent. No warm cloth on Saturday morning.

Weeks 3 to 5. The hen before the egg.


 

She is absorbing more of the calcium she was already eating. You see it in her first. Combs brighter and more vigorous. Out in the run early instead of hanging back. The one who was not herself is herself again.

Weeks 6 to 9 and on. Then the shells.

 

Fewer that give under your thumb. Fewer ridges and rough patches. It comes one egg at a time, not all at once.

Then it holds. Worm eggs live in the soil your flock walks every day, so the exposure never stops. That is why this goes in the feed daily, like grit and shell.

 

If you are four weeks in and the combs have changed but the eggs have not, nothing is wrong. That is the order it happens in.

Reasonable thing to ask. The difference is inclusion rate and consistency of the material. Garlic especially is one where more is not better and the amount genuinely matters, particularly with younger birds. You are paying for the same ratio every day instead of a guess.

Because the evidence for both of those as wormers is thin, and I would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. The ingredient doing the work here is the oregano, which has considerably better research behind it in poultry than either of the ones you tried. Stay sceptical though. Not too late. Age and worms are two separate problems and they stack on top of each other. Some thinning with age is normal and you cannot undo that part. The worm part you can. What you are aiming for at that age is her best rather than a pullet's.
